Sara Naim | ‘Building Blocks’ | The Third Line

02:50 mins

In her latest body of work, Sara Naim (@saranaim__) continues her preoccupation with micro imagery, using it as a way to investigate notions of nostalgia and the invisible. Taking three items from her native Syria, jasmine, soil and Aleppo soap, Naim mixes these with her dead skin cells and photographs their cellular structure using a scanning electron microscope. She then magnifies them to large-scale sculptural works entitled ‘Forms’, which were part of her exhibition ‘Building Blocks’ at @thethirdlinedxb earlier this year. In this video, Naim speaks to us about the ideas behind these works, how she began using the scanning electron microscope, and her exploration of themes such as connectivity, perception and memory.
