The 17th Edition of the Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art has been announced and is due to open 29 September 2024 and run until 5 January 2025. The curatorial framework of this edition’s guest curator, Alexia Fabre, and the title, Les voix des fleuves Crossing the Water, have also been revealed.
As the definitive contemporary art event in France, in recent decades the Lyon Biennale has cemented its place as one of the most exciting art events worldwide and one deeply rooted in its locality. Framing the biennale within the context of Lyon is fundamental to the curatorial framework, by placing a strong emphasis on both the city and the surrounding region. In this spirit, Alexia Fabre and artistic director Isabelle Bertolotti will focus this edition on the theme of openness to the other, using the metaphor of the river as a vehicle for the artists to explore their ever-changing rapport with the world around them, whether that be with other human beings or the natural world they inhabit.
With this next edition taking place in two new additional locations, Les Grandes Locos and the Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie, the biennale will be able to engage with audiences from the city of Lyon as well as the wider Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. Fifteen regional initiatives will involve artists collaborating directly with local communities, interacting with them and drawing on local knowledge to create their works.
As well as cementing the Lyon Biennale as an art calendar event that is truly proud of highlighting what the city and region have to offer, this year’s edition will help underline how art is at its most powerful and insightful when made accessible to as wide and diverse an audience as possible.
