Mounira Al Solh has been selected to represent Lebanon at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, which will take place from 20 April to 24 November 2024.
Al Solh’s practice deals with themes of gender and migration with a playful and poetic approach, spanning painting, drawing, embroidery, video, music and performance. Her work has been exhibited at Museumsquartier Osnabrück, Germany (2022); BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2022); Sharjah Biennial 15 (2023); Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Netherlands (2023); Busan Biennale (2022); Documenta 14, Kassel and Athens (2017); Venice Biennale (2015) among others. She currently co-publishes a magazine titled NOA (Not Only Arabic) and co-initiates Modka Beiroet, where she organises community-based exhibitions and workshops in the Netherlands and in Lebanon.
The artist was hand-picked by a selection committee consisting of Nada Ghandour, heritage and art curator; Nathalie Bondil, museum and exhibitions director, Institut du monde arabe, France; Jean-François Charnier, general heritage and art curator; Basel Dalloul, chairman and director of the Ramzi and Saeda Dalloul Art Foundation, Lebanon; and Elie Khouri, president of the Elie Khouri Art Foundation, UAE.
Nada Ghandour has been also appointed as commissioner and curator and Dina Bizri as the associate curator of the Lebanese Pavilion. The pavilion will be located in the Arsenal and is produced by the Lebanese Visual Art Association (LVAA), a non-profit organization established in Paris, France.
