When/Where

Miraz Art Space, City Cinema, Sarchinar

Details

Miraz Art Space is pleased to present When/Where, a solo exhibition by acclaimed Iraqi-Kurdish artist Avan Sdiq, curated by Shad Abdulkarim. This exhibition brings together sculptures, video, and painting in an immersive exploration of time, space, and perception.

In When/Where, Sdiq’s works exist simultaneously outside and within reality. Composed of layered units that function independently yet interrelate, each piece encourages the viewer to actively engage, creating new compositions and meanings through movement and perspective. Transparent surfaces, layered forms, and oscillating sequences invite the audience to inhabit the temporal and spatial dimensions of the artwork, highlighting the fluidity of perception and the instability of memory and place.

Curated by Shad Abdulkarim, the exhibition emphasizes the dynamic relationship between artwork and viewer. Sdiq’s practice—figures untethered in time, layered and evolving imagery, and works that merge stillness with movement—reflects broader social and psychological questions about presence, memory, and perception. Abdulkarim’s curatorial approach foregrounds these relationships, shaping an environment where the audience’s interaction becomes integral to the work’s unfolding meaning.

When/Where underscores the artist’s engagement with matter, language, and temporality, while also illustrating Abdulkarim’s vision of art as a space for dialogue, experience, and reflection. The exhibition challenges the boundaries between observation and participation, offering an intimate encounter with the impermanence and complexity of human experience.
