The 59th Carnegie International, curated by Ryan Inouye, Danielle A Jackson and Liz Park, is set to take place from 2 May to 3 January 2027 at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and four partner locations around the city: the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Kamin Science Center, Mattress Factory and the Thelma Lovette YMCA.
This year’s edition takes place under the theme If the word we, the title of which is derived from a commissioned catalogue essay by Haytham el-Wardany and posits the first-word plural “we” as having an open-ended and shifting meaning.
The exhibition will feature 61 artists and collectives participating this year, with 36 pieces commissioned for the upcoming show, the most in Carnegie International’s history.
Carnegie International is the longest-running recurring exhibition in North America and will see participants explore the selected theme through painting, photography, sculpture, installation work, video, performance and theatre, touching upon subjects ranging from politics to geography to unearth the meaning of collective experiences and exchanges across time and place amid rapid changes.
