Set amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Zurich in Switzerland, The Dolder Grand stands as a beacon of luxury and cultural splendour. This iconic hotel, renowned for its impeccable service and panoramic views, recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking a milestone in its illustrious history. Central to its allure are the meticulously curated art collections housed within its walls, rendering The Dolder Grand a haven not only for discerning travellers but also for art enthusiasts seeking a transcendent experience.
Upon entering The Dolder Grand, guests are immediately greeted by the opulent embrace of Neoclassical pillars, each adorned with Corinthian capitals and complemented by sparkling crystal chandeliers and exquisitely detailed ceilings. The visible blend of architectural elements spanning different epochs gracefully underscores the historical significance and enduring charm of this iconic building. Originally designed by the Swiss architect Jacques Gros in 1889, the hotel underwent a facelift by Foster + Partners during 2004–08 and holds the unique position of being the first hotel project designed by Norman Foster. Within the extension, the luxury resort integrates two new wings featuring the addition of a ballroom and a spa, further extending the hotel’s prestigious amenities.
The hotel is especially renowned for its in-house art collection, which comprises a stunning array of over 100 works by 90 celebrated artists including Takashi Murakami, Mel Ramos and Salvador Dalí. Curated by the Schwarzenbach family, the collection is thoughtfully integrated throughout the hotel spaces in a tapestry of artistic excellence that enriches every corner. Particularly striking is The Chapel of Remorse (2019), a stained-glass installation set within the imperial staircase. This striking transcendental piece by the Finnish artist Jani Leinonen is composed of six stained-glass sections and signifies the symbolic metaphors of spiritual resonance and the interplay of light.
With the recent celebration of the hotel’s 125th anniversary, The Dolder Grand unveiled The Perfect Stay, an in-house residency where seven esteemed artists from around the globe translate their experiences of the hotel into unique artistic expressions. Such dynamic interpretations showcase The Dolder Grand’s enduring commitment to art and help enrich its existing collection as a cultural cornerstone in Zurich.
Beyond exhibiting artworks within its walls, The Dolder Grand actively seeks collaborations with local and international artists, creating a thriving cultural exchange. Collaborative projects and interactive exhibits enhance the guest experience by promoting a deeper connection with art and its many interpretations. As part of these constant links to artistry, in 2020 the hotel warmly welcomed the Saudi contemporary artist, Abdallah Qandeel, providing guests with a unique and memorable experience. In a specially prepared space within The Library, a mirrored floor was installed exclusively for Qandeel’s live painting sessions, which lasted several weeks and provided guests with the extraordinary opportunity to witness the artist’s creative process at firsthand. This artistic endeavour culminated in an exhibition showcasing the pieces that had been created during this immersive and interactive period at the hotel.
Artistic excellence is matched by the impeccable standard of dining at The Dolder Grand. Hosting an array of gourmet venues, the hotel offers a culinary journey that celebrates Swiss gastronomy and international cuisine of the highest order. At The Restaurant, which is celebrated with two Michelin stars, Chef Fine Dining Heiko Nieder crafts exceptional dishes that are both artful and sublime. For those craving local flavours, Saltz offers a menu influenced by Swiss traditions and has garnered 15 Gault Millau points for its commitment to quality. Oriental Chef de Cuisine Firas El-Borji’s culinary journey adds a touch of the Levant, inviting guests to explore the vibrant flavours of the Middle East, while the award-winning Canvas Bar and Lounge elegantly blends historical charm and stunning contemporary art works. The Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich exemplifies the seamless integration of art and hospitality, where every corner tells a story and every artwork sparks conversation. By cultivating an environment that celebrates creativity and embraces diversity, the hotel not only enhances its allure as a premier destination but also enriches the lives of those who have the privilege of experiencing its unique blend of luxury and cultural sophistication.
