Abu Dhabi Art has announced artist commissions and participating curators for its upcoming 2023 edition.

This year’s Beyond Emerging Artists exhibition, curated by Morad Montazami, will feature commissions by Almaha Jaralla, Samo Shalaby, and Latifa Saeed. Artist Commissions in Cultural Sites this edition will include commissioned, site-specific works by Nujoom Al Ghanem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, presented at Al Jahili Fort and Al Ain Oasis.

Montazami said: “Beyond their clear differences as artists, there are also shared concerns which connect them and bring them together. All three navigate an interesting path between private and public space, or the subjective and the collective.”

“I’m truly honoured to take part in this edition of the fair and I’m looking forward to sharing with its audience the work I’ve been creating since 2020. I spent a lifetime working in solitude under shades of colours and materials without knowing where my work will end up, said Al Ghanem.

Abu Dhabi Art also announced details of the 2023 Gateway exhibition featuring a survey of Hashel Al Lamki’s works and curated by Venetia Porter. Entitled Maqam after the Al Ain neighbourhood where Al Lamki grew up, the exhibition presents past and recent works exploring the relationship between natural landscapes and human intervention.

Venetia Porter said: “I first saw Hashel’s work at the Lyon Biennale (2022), Manifesto of Fragility, curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, and loved his large installation Rodinia. This show will highlight the depth of his love for Al Ain where he grew up, and his fascination with the geology and history of the UAE.”

Abu Dhabi Art 2023 runs from 22 to 26 November 2023. The exhibitions and commissions will be on view from 22 November until the end of January 2024.
