Art Jameel today unveils Tarabot: Weaving A Living Forum, a sustainable, immersive pavilion that will host talks, presentations and community programmes throughout and after COP28. Designed by Beirut-based regenerative consultancy and architecture practice theOtherDada, founded by architect Adib Dada, the pavilion is set within Dubai’s Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park.
The conceptual impetus behind Tarabot is the notion of an ‘interspecies ecotone’, acting as a shared space between humans and other species and establishing a dialogue between the natural and urban environment. The design of the pavilion is founded on four pillars: Soil, Water, Plants and Energy. Made with locally sourced, sustainable materials – including clay, mycelium, date palm waste and upcycled fabric – after its de-installation Tarabot will be repurposed for domestic planting on land and an underwater habitat for coral and fish.
As part of the pavilion, Art Jameel also commissioned a series of artworks by Solimar Miller and which evoke the flora and fauna of the UAE in an exploration of the impact of urbanisation on the environment.
Fady Jameel, chairman and founder of Art Jameel, said: “Tarabot is an excellent
way to illustrate our commitment to innovation in addressing timely global issues, serving as a hub for collaboration across the fields of art, architecture and technology. The pavilion stands as a living testament to cutting-edge and dynamic solutions that underpin our ethos across our endeavours.”
Antonia Carver, director of Art Jameel, said: “Tarabot is a radical space that pioneers exciting new research and architectural materials and also actively engages the community in thinking-in-public about a shared sustainable future.”
Tarabot: Weaving A Living Forum will remain on view until 30 April 2024.
