The New Museum has unveiled the artists and collectives participating in the sixth edition of its Triennial, set to take place from 4 February until 16 May 2027.
The New Museum Triennial was established in 2009 as a recurring international exhibition dedicated to early-career artists. Entitled The Outside Expands, the 2027 exhibition will bring together 36 artists and collectives from 34 countries, including Mandy El-Sayegh, Nour Jaouda and Fehras Publishing Practices, with the most expansive international representation so far. It will also be the first edition to take place in the museum’s newly opened, OMA-designed expansion.
Co-curated by Vivian Crockett and Isabella Rjeille, The Outside Expands takes part of its inspiration from a 1979 intervention by Brazilian collective 3NÓS3 and X Galería, which placed duct-taped Xs over the entrances of multiple São Paulo galleries. Accompanied by a message, “What is inside remains, what is outside expands,” which questioned the boundaries of cultural institutions during Brazil’s civil-military dictatorship. It also references artist and writer Jota Mombaça’s 2018 intervention in Rio de Janeiro, in which the phrase “What has no space is everywhere” was cut from a temporary museum wall, leaving its absence visible. The “X” also refers more generally to a crossroads and a space for reflection and decisions.
These references inform the triennial’s consideration of how artistic practices can challenge established boundaries around territory, gender and identity, while opening up possibilities for alternative forms of collaboration.
