Dia Al-Azzawi has been announced as the winner of the Great Arab Minds Award in Literature and Arts 2024.
The Iraqi artist was recognised for his contributions to contemporary Arab art throughout his decades-long career. Al-Azzawi notably blends contemporary issues, history and culture from the Arab world in his artwork, in a testament to Arab identity both past and present.
Al-Azzawi’s practice is characterized by the use of both modern and traditional components, while his style blends Arabic calligraphy and poetry with elements of sculptural visual art. With artworks showcased in a wide number of exhibitions the world over, Al-Azzawi’s artistic career exemplifies the beauty of the written word in Arabic, while touching audiences for its unwavering dedication to also highlighting the struggles and major events faced by the region.
The Great Arab Minds Prize is awarded to Arabs whose life’s work has significantly contributed to paving the way for a brighter future for humankind. Each year, individuals are awarded across six categories: Natural Sciences (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry), Economics, Medicine, Literature and Arts, Engineering and Technology, and Architecture and Design. Recipients of the award, bearing the name of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, will receive AED 1 million to fund their research and projects, further contributing to their impact. The award is also an opportunity for recipients to gain further recognition and opportunities resulting from this significant achievement.
