Emirati artist Noor Al Suwaidi presents her solo exhibition, the sun is for everyone/the moon is for you, at Jossa by Alserkal in Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue showcasing a series of new works in both painting and collage.
“I am thrilled to share a new body of work and am very grateful for the generous support of Alserkal Avenue, that has been a pillar in building cultural community and engagement in the UAE,” said Al Suwaidi.
Reshma Mehra, Deputy Director of Alserkal Initiatives said, “Supporting the UAE’s arts community and providing a platform for practitioners to present their work and engage audiences has always been the driving force at Alserkal Avenue. Noor has long been a valuable contributor to the UAE’s art scene and we are pleased to host her exhibition.”
Al Suwaidi’s new body of work comprises nine paintings and a collection of collages – the latter medium a first for the artist, whose last show was staged in 2014. She had first experimented with collage during her undergraduate study at the American University of Washington DC (2001-2004) and revisited the medium now. Where the paintings appear softer, courtesy of a soothing color palette, the collages are crisp, possessing an almost unambiguous composition. The paintings, featuring Al Suwaidi’s trademark fusion of abstraction and figuration, mark a departure from previous works through the presence of negative space – a new aspect of her oeuvre. In exposing raw areas of the canvas, Al Suwaidi offers negative space and positive interpretation.
