Led by Nicolas Bourriaud as artistic director, Pansori, a soundscape of the 21st century investigates the political organisation of the space we live in, from bordered geographies and housing to human settlement on the planet. Connecting musical and visual forms, the biennial recreates the spirit of pansori, a musical genre originating in 17th-century Korea and which translates to ‘the voice of the subalterns’.
This edition is divided into two parts, taking place across the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall and the historical neighborhood of Yangnim-dong. Artists featured in the first section explore interhuman and interspecies relations as well as the relationship between our world and the cosmos, while the second section focuses on sound projects and collaborative works.
The biennale programming encompasses an exhibition, an opening opera and a symposium bringing together artists and philosophers.
The 15th Gwangju Biennale runs from 7 September to 1 December 2024.
