Malat Gallery opens a new space in on 27 January. Situated just steps away from the Burj Khalifa, the gallery’s 158 square meter venue will serve as a new platform for contemporary art, bridging international and regional artistic conversations.
This new outpost marks JD Malat Gallery’s first venture into the Middle East, following its presence in Mayfair, London. With a focus on contemporary art, the gallery has become known for supporting emerging talent and promoting the careers of lesser-known artists. Jean-David Malat, the gallery’s founder, sees the move to Dubai as a chance to engage with a growing and diverse art market. As shared with Canvas in an interview, Malat said: “The region is constantly growing and there is so much potential in terms of art and a collector base of people with a sensibility for art. There is also a lot of young talent in the region who need to be given platforms. If I can give this platform to artists, I will think it’s a good achievement.”
The inaugural exhibition, Carte Blanche, will feature a diverse array of works by 14 artists from JD Malat Gallery’s roster, including Kojo Marfo, Conrad Jon Godly, Santiago Parra, Henrik Uldalen, Ed Moses, Andy Moses, Luis Olaso, Ur Kasin, Tim Kent, Sophie-Yen Bretez, Georg Óskar, Masayoshi Nojo, Katrin Fridriks and Yann Leto.
Beyond exhibitions, JD Malat Gallery Dubai plans to engage with the local community through public art projects, cross-cultural collaborations and partnerships with academic institutions. With this exciting new venture, the gallery aims to further solidify Dubai’s place as a key hub for global contemporary art.
