The Lahore Biennale Foundation has announced its third edition (LB03) and revealed the artist lineup.
Entitled Of Mountains and Seas, the Biennale will run from 5 October to 8 November 2024 across the city of Lahore, with various venues including UNESCO World Heritage sites set to host artworks, such as Lahore Fort in the Walled City, with the renowned Shalimar Gardens participating as a venue for the Biennale for the first time. The Lahore Museum, Pak Tea House, Bradlaugh Hall and the YMCA building and Nasir Bagh will also serve as exhibition locales.
The curator of LB03, John Tain, has gathered over sixty artists from more than thirty countries to showcase a wide range of site-specific artworks, immersive installations and over 40 new commissions. With the intention of highlighting problems arising from the degradation of the environment, the artists shift the focus through their work to other resources, such as indigenous heritage. to look towards future sustainable solutions. The participating artists will navigate this ecological theme from the point of view of Pakistan, extending out to the wider Global South, to bring to the forefront the urgent need to address ecological disasters such as floods, pollution, and even social inequality affecting these areas.
John Tain notes, “By positioning Lahore as a strategic location for global efforts to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, LB03 signals the need to shift agency for environmental discourse to the very societies that will be most affected”.
The Biennale will end with a Climate Congress, supported by the Getty Foundation, which will unite researchers and artists from over 42 countries and a large number of institutions to discuss the role of art and the humanities in the Global South in the climate crisis.
