The Liverpool Biennial has revealed the details for its upcoming 2025 edition, including the theme and participating artists.
The 13th edition of the Biennial will take place from 7 June to 14 September 2025.
The theme of this year’s Liverpool Biennial has been revealed as ‘BEDROCK’, curated by Marie-Anne McQuay. Inspired by the unique geography of the city of Liverpool, as well as the underlying beliefs of its social foundations, the theme pays homage to the people and principles which serve as grounding forces for the city.
Speaking on the Biennial, curator Marie-Anne McQuay, said “The city’s geological foundations and its psyche have provided the starting point for the conversations of Liverpool Biennial 2025, with the invited artists bringing us their own definition of ‘BEDROCK’. Definitions which include family and chosen family, cultural heritage carried across the generations, and the environments that nurture and restore them. Central to this understanding of BEDROCK is the sense of loss that comes from the ongoing legacies of colonialism and empire so formative to Liverpool’s foundations.
In responding to the city, artists have taken inspiration from Liverpool’s archives and histories, from its communities and civic spirit, and from taking time to dwell in its green spaces which support plant, insect, and bird life in unexpected ways through planned and unplanned urban developments.”
Several venues across the city of Liverpool will participate, including the galleries of the Bluecoat, FACT Liverpool, Open Eye Gallery, as well as Tate Liverpool + RIBA North. New venues will also host artworks, including the Liverpool Cathedral, Walker Art Gallery, and Liverpool Central Library.
Thirty artists and collectives from around the world have been selected, with new and commissioned artworks to be showcased. Artists include Cevdet Erek, Mounira Al Solh and Nour Bishouty and more.
