Saudi multimedia artist Mohammad Alfaraj has been awarded the Hayy Jameel Façade Commission to create a public artwork on the 25-metre front wall of the Jeddah-based venue – a blank ‘canvas’ that is integral to the building’s architectural intent. His proposal was selected from among 80 submissions by a jury consisting of Saudi artist Dr Ahmed Mater; Aric Chen, general and artistic director of Het Nieuwe Instituut; Elina Kountouri, NEON Greece director; and Art Jameel curator Rahul Gudipudi. “The project will pay homage to Jeddah and its people, celebrating its past, present, and its future of endless possibilities,” said Alfaraj of the artwork, entitled The Face of the City.
