Nnena Kalu, Rene Matić, Mohammed Sami and Zadie Xa have been announced as the shortlisted artists for the Turner Prize 2025. An exhibition of their work will take place in September at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery in Bradford, England, with the winner announced on 9 December.
Alex Farquharson, Director of Tate Britain and Chair of the Turner Prize Jury, said of the nominated artists: “The shortlist reflects the breadth of artistic practice today, from painting and sculpture to photography and installation, and each of the artists offers a unique way of viewing the world through personal experience and expression”
Mohammed Sami, known for his large-scale paintings, was nominated for his recent solo exhibition at Blenheim Palace entitled After the Storm. Nnena Kalu was nominated for her participation in Conversations at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery as well as for her works at Manifesta 15 in Barcelona. Rene Matić was selected for the shortlist for their solo exhibition AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH at CCA Berlin, which included highly personal photography and installation works. Zadie Xa was included by the jury for her current installation of painting, mural, textile and sound presented at Sharjah Biennial 16.
This year the jury was chaired by Alex Farquharson, Director, Tate Britain. Jury members included Andrew Bonacina, Independent Curator; Sam Lackey, Director, Liverpool Biennial; Priyesh Mistry, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Projects, The National Gallery and Habda Rashid, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Fitzwilliam Museum.
