The Diriyah Biennale Foundation has announced the appointment of Ute Meta Bauer as artistic director of the second edition of its Contemporary Art Biennale, set to take place in January 2024.
Bauer is an esteemed curator and a professor at the Nanyang Technological University School of Art, Design and Media, where she co-chairs the Master’s programme in museum studies and curatorial practices. Her illustrious career has seen her serve as curator of the Singapore Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale, co-curator of the 17th Istanbul Biennial, co-curator of Documenta11 on the team of artistic director Okwui Enwezor and artistic director of the third Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. She has also held executive positions at leading cultural and academic institutions including the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, the Office for Contemporary Art Norway in Oslo, the Royal College of Art, London and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Bauer was selected for the role by an independent, international advisory committee comprising Dr Rafal Niemojewski, Director of Biennial Foundation; Antonia Carver, Director of Art Jameel; artist and curator Akram Zaatari; curator Raneem Farsi and Sarah Binladen, patron of the arts and collector.
