The Whitney Museum of American Art has revealed the participating artists for the Whitney Biennial 2026.
The biennial marks its 82nd edition next year, continuing the museum’s long-running survey of approaches to art making and shifting understandings of American art. Co-curated by Whitney curators Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer, with curatorial support from Beatriz Cifuentes and Carina Martinez, it will bring together artists working in a range of different media. Works by 56 artists, duos and collectives will be presented across the museum’s gallery spaces, alongside a series of performances and public programmes taking place both onsite and online.
Participants are drawn from across 25 US states, as well as Afghanistan, Chile, Iraq, Okinawa, The Philippines, Puerto Rico and Vietnam. MENA representatives will include Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Kamrooz Aram, Ali Eyal, Samia Halaby and Nour Mobarak.
Marcela Guerrero, the DeMartini Family Curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art notes, “Co-curating the Whitney Biennial offers a unique opportunity to think about the ways artists are entangled – formally and thematically – within this ecosystem we know as contemporary art. With this biennial, we hope to foreground a network of kinships that gesture toward forms of coexisting in this world”.
Whitney Biennial 2026 will emphasise how artists respond to the present moment through interconnected themes, rather than a single framework. Shared histories and collective experiences will be highlighted, allowing for multiple points of entry as the biennial creates space for viewers to encounter works that reflect ongoing conditions and modes of coexistence.
