6:08 PM | The Beirut Blast and its effects on art & culture

11:00 mins

On 4 August 2020, Beirut was devastated by the biggest man-made explosion in recent memory. The port blast killed nearly 200 people, injured thousands and left many more homeless. Heartbreak and anger mounted over the destruction, hurting a city already struggling to cope, with protests, the pandemic and economic crisis looming over the country.

In the aftermath, the Sep/Oct 2020 issue of Canvas, “Beirut Speaks,” shared the voices of artists, architects, activists, designers and professionals from the cultural sector as they sought to reassess and rebuild after the blast hit the Lebanese capital.

Now six months later we share those voices on screen and remember that day, we pay tribute to those lost and we must continue to speak about what happened in Beirut on Tuesday, 4 August 2020 at 6:08 pm.
