The final list of artists has been announced for the 18th edition of the Lyon Biennale, which will unfold across the city from 19 September to 13 December 2026.
Entitled To pass from one dream to another, the biennale is curated by Catherine Nichols alongside artistic director Isabelle Bertolotti and brings together 120 artists including Yasmeen Al Daya, Monira Al Qadiri, Joyce Joumaa, Sirag Sesetyan, Huda Takriti and Can Yıldırım & Lalin Mercan, and more, who will showcase works across 11 venues around Lyon.
Taking inspiration from Lyon’s traboules, the city’s network of semi-secret passageways, courtyards and staircases, the biennale explores these spaces as metaphors for movement and transition. Drawing from German philosopher Walter Benjamin’s The Arcades Project, the biennale will consider how urban environments shape collective dreams and reveal hidden histories.
While Lyon’s traboules have long been associated with trade, industry and labour, they also serve as a starting point for a broader reflection on the economy as a system of exchange and circulation. The biennale reconsiders the meaning of economy beyond financial exchange, focusing on the systems of care and connection that support collective life. Further inspired by French artist Robert Filliou’s Principes d’économie poétique, the biennale proposes a search for alternative economic imaginaries and how artistic practices can challenge existing systems.
