Art Jameel and the V&A have announced the shortlisted projects for the 7th Edition of the Jameel Art Prize.
The Jameel Prize, which is the V&A’s international award for Islamic tradition-inspired contemporary art and design, turns its attention this year to the art of moving images and digital media. Founded in 2009, the triennial competition is worth £25,000 and aims to highlight artists who celebrate Islamic heritage and its significance in our contemporary times.
The shortlisted artists for the Jameel Prize: Moving Images include: Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, Jawa El Khash, Alia Farid, Zahra Malkani, Khandakar Ohida, Marrim Akashi Sani, and a joint submission by Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian. For this edition, the artists work with film, time-based media and digital technologies, as well as sculpture, sound, VR and installation, and delve into themes such as revolution, ecology, spirituality and domesticity.
The international jury brings artists Moreshin Allahyari and Ajlan Gharem, curator Sadia Shirazi, and academic Laura U. Marks together, and is chaired by Tristram Hunt, V&A Director. The winner of the Jameel Prize will be announced on 27 November 2024, and a group exhibition of the finalist’s work will take place at the V&A from 30 November 2024. Jameel Prize: Moving Images will continue internationally in 2025. Hayy Jameel in Jeddah will be among those hosting the exhibition on its global tour.
