Busan Biennale 2024 Announces Final Artist Lineup

The 2024 edition of the Busan Biennale, has announced its final artist lineup. Hailing from a diverse array of 36 territories and countries, a total of 62 artists and collectives will showcase their work at the biennale. These include Golrokh Nafisi with Ahmadali Kadivar, Shuruq Harb with Federica Bueti, Sophia Al-Maria, Subversive Film and Joe Namy.
 
Curators Vera Mey and Philippe Pirotte will work with artists under the theme of Seeing in the Dark, a contradiction in itself, as visitors are encouraged to forgo their senses and discover new ways of thinking. Under this title, the Biennale examines the idea of Enlightenment, using South Korea as a starting point for viewing the world through Buddhist Enlightenment, as well as reimagining world history through the concept of Pirate Enlightenment.
 
The artists will interpret these themes both literally and metaphorically, referencing a range of ideas from the domination of Western powers in the East, to experimental works around the senses in darkness. Pirate Enlightenment is examined across places central to its histories, namely African and Caribbean countries.
 
This year the venues for the Biennale are located in Busan’s downtown area and include the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art, the Busan Modern & Contemporary History Museum, HANGSUNG1918-Busan Community Cultural Center, and Choryang House.
