The Venice Biennale has revealed a list of 332 artists participating in the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, taking place in the Central Pavilion (Giardini) and in the Arsenale from 20 April to 24 November 2024. The exhibition will be curated by Adriano Pedrosa under the title Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere.
The 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will take place across two sections – the Nucleo Contemporaneo and the Nucleo Storico – and will explore the figure of the ‘outsider’ in all its forms, othered by nationality, race, gender, sexuality or wealth. The Nucleo Contemporaneo will feature a special section dedicated to the Disobedience Archive, a project by Marco Scotini. A video archive exploring the connections between artistic practices and activism, the Disobedience Archive consists of works by 39 artists and collectives made between 1975 and 2023. The section is divided into two parts: Diaspora activism and Gender Disobedience.
The Nucleo Storico brings together works from 20th century Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia and investigates the histories of modernisms in the Global South. This section unfolds across three rooms: Portraits, Abstractions and a room devoted to the worldwide Italian artistic diaspora in the 20th century.
This edition’s Biennale College Arte, a programme aimed at training and supporting young emerging artists, is now in its second iteration. This edition includes four selected projects by Agnes Questionmark, Joyce Joumaa, Sandra Poulson and Nazira Karimi. Each artists will receive a grant of EUR 25,000 for the realisation of the final works, which will be presented as part of the 60th International Art Exhibition.
The Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to Anna Maria Maiolino and Nil Yalter during the Biennale Arte 2024 awards and inauguration ceremony, to be held on 20 April 2024.
