Wael Shawky will represent Egypt at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Lisson Gallery, Barakat Contemporary, Galleria Lia Rumma and Sfeir-Semler Gallery have announced.
In his research-based multimedia practice, which spans film, performance, painting and sculpture, Shawky explores notions of national, religious and artistic identity. Lisson Gallery also announced Shawky’s solo exhibition I Am Hymns of The New Temples, set to run alongside the Venice Biennale at Museo Palazzo Grimani in Venice. Opening on 17 April, the exhibition is co-curated by Massimo Osanna, Andrea Viliani and Gabriel Zuchtriegel. I Am Hymns of The New Temples is organized in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, as part of the programme Pompeii Commitment. Archaeological Matters.
Curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will run from 20 April to 24 November 2024.
